Mamdani Makes History
Zohran Mamdani, the 34-year-old Democrat, has become the first Muslim mayor of New York City. He seizes the victory with over 50% of the vote. What sets him apart is his determined policy agenda, focused on transforming New York and improving life for working families. Through these pledges he wishes to make New York a better, more habitual place.
Mamdani was born and raised in Kampala, Uganda, until the age of 7 when he and his family moved to New York City. Education wise, he attended and graduated from the Bronx High School of Science and later achieved a degree from Bowdoin College in Africana Studies. Whilst only entering the mayoral race in October 2024, by this November he had become City Hall’s newest leader in one of the fastest political ascents in recent history.
The new mayor’s campaign was defined by its ambitious nature as he set out progressive policies aimed at tackling New York’s deep inequalities. His main pledges include free city buses, rent freeze, universal childcare and cheaper groceries. Although some may criticise this and say it’s unworkable, unrealistic and exorbitantly expensive, Mamdani sets out clearly how he will achieve this in an interview with News 12. His plan is to “raise 2 principal taxes”, the first is a personal income tax on the top 1% of New Yorkers - raising their income taxes by 2%. The second is to raise the state’s corporate tax to match New Jersey’s. He claims these combined can raise $9 billion.
Public response to Mamdani’s plans has been divided, as there is both enthusiasm for change and concern how his policies will be executed. Whilst some believe he has a “dangerous point of view” when not recognising Israel as a Jewish state, his supporters argue his views stem from a consistent commitment to human rights and equality. AP Archive interviewed some New Yorkers - discovering optimistic reactions. With some saying they’re “really happy” with the outcome and believing it’s a “positive step forward”.
However, some critique this, as Sternlicht, a billionaire real estate investor, believes Mamdani is going to “turn New York City into Mumbai” he expresses in an interview with the CNBC Property Play. He argues that Mamdani’s escalating project costs are discouraging further investment from companies.
Considering backlash from the president, Donald Trump had been constantly warning people if they chose Mamdani over his favoured candidate, Andrew Cuomo, he would cut funding for the city. However, Mamdani responded to this with “I have four words for you: turn the volume up", reflecting his diligence and determination towards helping the citizens of New York.
Zohran Mamdani is set to take office in January 2026, how he handles these criticisms and the actions he takes are significant for in shaping both his leadership and the future of New York City.
