The Importance of Public Transport
Public transport is often stigmatised for being dirty, unfriendly and the perfect setting for inevitable conversations with strangers, but its significance in the lives of young people is much more positive.
As well as the environmental benefits it poses, public transport also enables the travel of young people to places inaccessible by walking or cycling, supporting pre-driving license independence. From travelling to college, part time jobs and weekend leisure activities, public transport plays a key role in enabling young people to interact with wider society, improving social skills and supporting necessary milestones.
Just a five-minute walk from campus, Stourbridge Interchange provides 20+ bus connections from Stourbridge, including Wolverhampton, Dudley, Birmingham and Kinver, but most often thought of is the number 9 – travelling from Stourbridge to Colmore Row in Birmingham, usually within the hour. Local Stourbridge Town railway station also provides for faster journeys, as well as benefitting students living further away from college.
So why is it important that we use public transport?
Firstly, public transport is much more environmentally friendly than each individual on a bus or train travelling by car. If we all use public transport on a regular basis, we can reduce our carbon footprints whilst still being able to reach our destinations.
Secondly, it is good exercise! Not only is it healthier for the planet, but the walks to and from bus stops for some of us are the only chance to stretch our legs in the day, making it a healthy choice for ourselves too.
And thirdly, it is an opportunity to socialise with friends before a busy day. Bus or train journeys for some can mean time to have a chat with friends before college starts, boosting moods and encouraging social interaction. Even when friends are not with you for the journey, time spent travelling can also be a suitable time to listen to some uplifting music after an early wake, or even podcasts which can contribute to super-curricular and independent learning goals.
So, whether you travel by bus or train to and from college, your small choice has a significant impact on the environment and your daily routine, decreasing your carbon footprint and promoting a healthier lifestyle.
